Keeping traditional ammunition loads of the Old West alive through modern technology

Cimarron Firearms stepped up to meet the need for commercially stamped traditional hunting calibers to support their customers and products.

Cimarron Firearms, makers of quality replica firearms of the Old West, have been quietly filling a hole that was left wide open when makers of traditional hunting calibers crept away into the sunset. Since 2020, Cimarron Firearms has partnered with Steinel Ammunition to offer 45-60 Win. and 50-95 Win. ammunition to support customers and the many true-to-original replicas they design and produce.

“While the reloading community exists for traditional hunting and cowboy action rounds, it didn’t help our customers who wanted the experience of owning and hunting with one of our Tom Horn or Presidio lever action rifles,” Bryce Wayt , vice president of operations and media. for Cimmaron Firearms, he explained. “It became clear to us that we needed to provide that optimal experience, and that included providing commercially available ammunition to our customers.”

As American manufacturers rode the wave of demands for personal defense ammunition, Cimarron started from scratch. Sourcing reloadable brass, bullets and powder to produce the 45-60 and 50-95 calibers became a logistical obstacle course during the months of ammunition shortages. Perseverance and a determination to provide customers with the same high quality in their designated ammunition as in their firearms led Cimarron to test various magazines until finally settling on Steinel Ammunition to load Cimarron’s ammunition. Steinel Ammunition, a premium ammunition company, focuses on historic, traditional and hard-to-find calibers of ammunition.

“We listened to our customers, and as a result, we have built a state-of-the-art ammunition testing facility for our ongoing research and development of new and vintage calibers,” Wayt concluded.
