Squirrel and Canada goose hunting seasons began yesterday, September 1, and last through September 25. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation says the first few seasons are meant to help reduce or stabilize certain wildlife populations.

In parts of the North Country, early season antlerless bear and deer occur in specific wildlife management units.

The DEC says hunters should know where different types of hunting are allowed and have the proper permits and safety training.
