“We are fortunate and pleased to donate this building to the Civilian Marksmanship Program, an organization that shares our vision for youth shooting sports,” said Larry Potterfield, founder and CEO of MidwayUSA. “Although the building is no longer part of MidwayUSA’s future, we are confident that CMP will use the facility to develop new and existing competitive shooters and continue to add value to our local community.”

Renovation of the facility is expected to begin in early 2023.

New Mexico Supreme Court rules in favor of public access to public waters

Decision upholds the public’s right to walk or ford creek beds that cross privately owned land

SANTA FE, NM – The New Mexico Supreme Court ruled again in favor of public access to public waters in a decision Thursday upholding the public’s right to walk or wade through creek beds that cross privately owned land.

The court’s opinion ruling follows its unanimous decision in March to strike down a regulation that allowed property owners to close access to creeks that flow through their properties. The New Mexico chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, along with the New Mexico Wildlife Federation and the Adobe Whitewater Club of New Mexico, filed a lawsuit in 2020 asking the court to strike down the regulation as unconstitutional. That decision nullified the so-called No Navigability Rule and also nullified previously adopted closures on several New Mexico streams.

Today these groups celebrated the court’s latest ruling as a reaffirmation of a long-standing public right in New Mexico.

“The New Mexico chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is pleased to see the final take on stream access in our state,” said Joel Gay, New Mexico BHA policy advisor and former president, “but it shouldn’t come as a surprise. for neither of them. fishermen or landowners. In 1945, the New Mexico Supreme Court issued much the same opinion: that all of our state’s waters are public property and may be used for fishing, boating, and other recreational activities, so long as the public does not trespass on private property to enter or get out of the water stream.

“New Mexicans have always had this right of access,” continued Gay, who lives in Albuquerque. “It is a shame that for decades the riverside landowners and the NMDGF have said otherwise. Our thanks to the Supreme Court for reminding everyone of that fact.”

“New Mexico’s rivers are unparalleled across the country,” said Hattie Johnson, director of Southern Rocky Mountain management for American Whitewater. “The state constitution and legal precedent have always provided access to rivers and streams for recreation and fishing since statehood. Today’s Supreme Court decision explicitly protects the long-standing rights provided by a thriving, growing and inclusive outdoor recreation community. We are very proud of our affiliated club, Adobe Whitewater, and the other petitioners in the case. These dedicated rowers, fishermen, and outdoorsmen have fought tirelessly to protect the inherent rights of New Mexicans.”

“Going forward, we need to assess existing statutes, rules and policies to see what applies and where new ones may be needed to create a workable system that protects public and private rights,” said John Crenshaw, chairman of the New York City board. MexicoWildlife. Federation. “The NMWF looks forward to engaging in that conversation with stakeholders across the spectrum of the issue and thanks the NM Supreme Court for the clarity of its decision.”

Review a timeline of access to New Mexico’s public waters.

The New Mexico Constitution, which is based in part on Spanish and Mexican laws derived from the state’s colonial era and differs from other state constitutions, declares that all waters belong to the public. The state Supreme Court detailed that right of access more than 70 years ago.

BHA President and CEO Land Tawney heralded the court’s ruling as a victory for New Mexico and a victory for public access.

“This is a great day for New Mexicans from all walks of life,” said Tawney. “This decision solidifies that we, the people, are owners and have the right to access our public waters. A big and sincere thank you to those people who stepped forward. Your courage and steadfastness give hope to others facing similar challenges in other states. Let’s go fishing!”

NDA Introduces Groundbreaking “Field Aged Deer” Video and Aging Quiz

The National Deer Association is pleased to announce the premiere of a new educational video project, “Country Aged Deer,” produced in collaboration with The Bearded Buck. The 31-minute video uses footage of dozens of live, wild whitetail deer to teach the aging technique, followed by a test with 20 additional deer.

“The Bearded Buck team gave us full access to their incredible collection of whitetail footage from years of hunting, featuring males of all ages, and then offered to produce the final product,” said NDA Conservation Director and video presenter. Kip Adams. “The result is the NDA’s most comprehensive and realistic look at aging deer in the field.”

Estimating male age in the field is an important skill for any hunter who wants to increase the number of adult males in the forest they hunt and help balance the male:doe ratio to improve herd health. NDA teaches aging skills in numerous media, including Quality Whitetails magazine, educational posters, live seminars, and Dave Richards’ book Observing & Evaluating Whitetails. But the new video “Aging Deer in the Field” is unique because of the large number of live images of wild deer.

“Aging deer in the field is not an exact science,” Adams said. “It is a personal skill that is improved with practice, experience and follow-up. Fortunately, like humans, Whitetails possess distinctive body features by age class, and with a little practice, hunters can become adept at estimating the ages of males in the field. This video serves to introduce the topic and highlight the differences for each age class, from yearlings to mature animals. The $20 quiz allows viewers to practice what they learned.”

To watch the new video, visit the NDA YouTube channel at YouTube.com/deerassociation.

“We are grateful to our partners at The Bearded Buck for their support with this project,” said Lindsay Thomas Jr., director of communications for the NDA. “Jerry Tibbott, founder of The Bearded Buck, is a long-time member and supporter of the NDA, and his team went out of their way to provide his incredible footage, to film Kip’s instructions, and to produce the final video. There is nothing else of this quality available in aging dollars.”

Look for quality habitat for upland success this fall

Diverse hunting opportunities await Nebraska highland birders again this fall, and those willing to adapt to changing climate and habitat conditions should find success in many areas of the state.

“Surveys conducted earlier this summer looked more promising this year, but variable habitat conditions may pose challenges for hunters this fall due to the increasingly dry conditions that have prevailed across much of the state,” said John Laux. , Nebraska Highlands Game Program Manager. Games and Parks Commission.

Statewide, pheasant counts increased 26% during rural letter carrier surveys from July of this year and exceeded five-year averages in the Northeast, Southeast and Panhandle regions. Pheasant habitat is more isolated in eastern Nebraska, but where quality cover exists, hunters should find better numbers of birds. Parts of the Panhandle region continue to host some of the highest numbers of pheasants in the state, but populations remain variable due to the effects of drought in recent years.

The recent mild winter benefited northern quail populations throughout much of the state, with numbers increasing in five of the six management regions. The current nesting season is promising and could increase numbers further, although population levels are expected to remain below peaks in recent years. According to surveys, the southeast and south-central regions are home to some of the highest quail densities in the state and should provide some of the best hunting opportunities this fall.

The southeastern and far western portions of the Sandhills should offer the best hunting opportunities for prairie chickens and sharp-tailed grouse this fall. For the second year, dry conditions have reduced coverage across much of the state’s prairie grouse range. Based on field reports, production appears to be below average this year, but is highly variable. Finding adequate cover can be a challenge, but it will be the key to a successful hunt this season.

Upland hunters should know that the US Department of Agriculture has authorized emergency stocking and grazing on Conservation Reserve Program lands in 88 of Nebraska’s 93 counties. Like last year, this will likely affect remaining coverage, and associated hunting opportunities, at some CRP fields across the state this fall, including some open to the public, walk-in hunting through the Fields and Waters Program. Game and Parks Opens. For more information, visit OutdoorNebraska.org/crp-faqs.

Game and Parks recommends pre-season scouting as habitat conditions continue to change throughout the state.

Hunters should also be aware that drought conditions have increased the risk of wildfires in many areas of the state, and Game and Parks urges them to take the following precautions while out in the field:

  • Restrict driving to established roads and trails
  • Avoid parking vehicles in tall vegetation
  • Restrict the use of campfires
  • Dispose of cigarettes and other flammable objects properly.

Upland Outlook is based on biologists’ field reports, surveys of game species abundance, regional habitat trends, and weather conditions that could affect populations.

For the full perspective, detailed summaries of upland bird survey results, and other information about upland hunting, visit OutdoorNebraska.org/Upland.

To find places to hunt, pick up the 2022-23 Nebraska Public Access Atlas at a Game and Parks office or from numerous vendors throughout the state. This publication lists all public access land in Nebraska and is also available in various versions online at OutdoorNebraska.org/PublicAccessAtlas.

Pheasant, quail and partridge hunting season is October 29-January 31, 2023. Prairie Grouse season is September 1-January 31, 2023.

Why Hunters and Shooters Demand Swagger Bipods

Since the Swagger Bipods Hunter series was introduced to hunters and shooters, loyalty to the Swagger brand has grown. Demand has increased further by adding new designs such as the popular QD models and the SFR10 and SEA12 tactical bipods, which is the offspring of the original Hunter series.

For anyone asking “why Swagger?” there are numerous reasons. No matter which series of Swagger Bipods the hunter or shooter chooses, the unchanged features are what continue to make them say humbly, “Shoot Swagger.” The famed versatility of Swagger bipods is the backbone of hunters and shooters’ dedication to the product.

From the beginning, Swagger was designed as a hunting bipod. The first feature that hunters fell in love with was the ability to easily attach the bipod to their gun. If a hunter has his gun, he has his Swagger. This means no more bipods or shooting sticks in a vehicle or in the field after the hunt. Another coveted feature is that Swaggers are lightweight. Hunters don’t have to carry a bulky, heavy tripod or rest to shoot. With Swagger, the adaptability of going from a bipod to a shooting stick, all in one lightweight package that attaches to the weapon, is why versatility is often referred to when Swagger bipods are mentioned.

Swagger’s popular flexibility features allow the hunter or shooter to adjust to a stable shooting form when quickly standing, sitting, kneeling or prone. Proving that Swagger is the most versatile bipod on the market.

Hunter series and QD series

The Hunter series and the QD series are bipods designed for hunting. The Hunter Series attaches quickly to any firearm and allows the hunter to maintain a proper shooting position when he is standing, sitting, kneeling, or prone.
