New Yamaha provides aid to public land managers, recreationists and thousands of children across the country

Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, today announces Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative (OAI) grants totaling $145,175 for the second quarter of 2022 in support of its ongoing mission to protect, enhance and expand access to public lands for motorized and outdoor recreation. This quarter, Yamaha OAI resources were deployed to assist national efforts as well as specific projects that directly impact the future of powered recreation. Projects being funded in the second quarter grant cycle include:

• Develop a database of public land exchanges to help generate public awareness and participation in protecting access for recreation.
• Hold a workshop to educate land managers on building and maintaining sustainable trails to protect the safety of bicyclists and the future of access to public lands.
• Significant trail rehabilitation and rerouting efforts to enhance off-road experiences while protecting sensitive environments.
• Introducing kindergarten children to cycling.

Decision upholds the public’s right to walk or ford creek beds that cross privately owned land

SANTA FE, NM – The New Mexico Supreme Court ruled again in favor of public access to public waters in a decision Thursday upholding the public’s right to walk or wade through creek beds that cross privately owned land.

The court’s opinion ruling follows its unanimous decision in March to strike down a regulation that allowed property owners to close access to creeks that flow through their properties. The New Mexico chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, along with the New Mexico Wildlife Federation and the Adobe Whitewater Club of New Mexico, filed a lawsuit in 2020 asking the court to strike down the regulation as unconstitutional. Today these groups celebrated the court’s latest ruling as a reaffirmation of a long-standing public right in New Mexico.

The National Deer Association is pleased to announce the premiere of a new educational video project, “Country Aged Deer,” produced in collaboration with The Bearded Buck. The 31-minute video uses footage of dozens of live, wild whitetail deer to teach the aging technique, followed by a test with 20 additional deer.

Diverse hunting opportunities await Nebraska highland birders again this fall, and those willing to adapt to changing climate and habitat conditions should find success in many areas of the state.

Statewide, pheasant counts increased 26% during rural letter carrier surveys from July of this year and exceeded five-year averages in the Northeast, Southeast and Panhandle regions. Parts of the Panhandle region continue to host some of the highest numbers of pheasants in the state, but populations remain variable due to the effects of drought in recent years.

The recent mild winter benefited northern quail populations throughout much of the state, with numbers increasing in five of the six management regions. The current nesting season is promising and could increase numbers further, although population levels are expected to remain below peaks in recent years. The southeastern and far western portions of the Sandhills should offer the best hunting opportunities for prairie chickens and sharp-tailed grouse this fall.
