Heritage
Heritage consists of those places, structures and objects that we as a community have inherited from the past and want to hand on to future generations. Our heritage gives us a sense of living history and provides a physical link to the work and way of life of earlier generations.
It enriches our lives and helps us to understand who we are today. Heritage is evidence of our history. Conserving our heritage helps us to understand our past, and to contribute to the lives of future generations. It gives us a sense of continuity and belonging to the place where we live. Working with communities and individuals, we will help to identify the important places and objects; providing guidance on how to preserve heritage items, for future generations.
Louis Riel Institute’s (LRI) vision of Metis heritage is to have our heritage valued by everyone. Our definition of heritage includes the historical, natural, cultural, and technological aspects, which embraces landscapes, buildings and streetscapes, objects and records, as well as our stories—all of those tangible and intangible things that help to define us as individuals and communities.
The World Wide Web has been chosen as the primary medium for communicating media-rich heritage content to educational users, the Metis community and the general public.
The heritage section of our web site is a gateway to the Metis people’s rich historical, natural, cultural, and technological heritage. Our website will make our Metis heritage come alive. This section of our web site will build knowledge and skill to enrich the lives of individuals and their communities, making links between generations and building community identity.
